I am interested in animal behavioral ecology and how it can help us understand the evolution of human social and political behavior. Since 1987 I have studied chimpanzee behavior in Kibale National Park, Uganda (Kibale Chimpanzee Project, [https://kibalechimpanzees.wordpress.com/](https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__kibalechimpanzees.wordpress.com_&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=P4Qf2Iqc63Z3TgffoI5uIUnP4jTIc91RBbaV7k3gKzI&m=626K_3Jc0ocQCanjIV53EFB403gD3uTWnX0CjYFhc3uCj4mWcUZEUd2c6_E4vLTa&s=ltKrjMfqNl6VWnHX6yLwzwIc-BrTsSZBW2wkyBah1jA&e=)). My books have focused on the evolution of warfare (*Demonic Males,* 1996), human nutritional specialization on cooked food (*Catching Fire*, 2009) and explaining why humans have exceptional tendencies both for tolerance and violence (*The Goodness Paradox*, 2019)."
