I am interested in animal behavioral ecology and how it can help us understand the evolution of human social and political behavior. Since 1987 I have studied chimpanzee behavior in Kibale National Park, Uganda (Kibale Chimpanzee Project, https://kibalechimpanzees.wordpress.com/). My books have focused on the evolution of warfare (Demonic Males, 1996), human nutritional specialization on cooked food (Catching Fire, 2009) and explaining why humans have exceptional tendencies both for tolerance and violence (The Goodness Paradox, 2019)."
